the bible, hypocrisy & alternative sexualities

February 1, 2015

Written in 2015. Some words and facts have changed since then; we've kept the post as it was written. For up-to-date information, see our gay kink resources.

Recently, I have received a number of emails from someone who stumbled across my Tumblr Blog, and we've started a dialogue about religion, and how it has done so much psychological and emotional damage to people of sexualities which go against the teachings of the Church. This got me thinking about the hypocrisy that is the Bible...

When conservative religious people make their arguments against alternative sexualities, they always lean on the text within the Bible. They claim that homosexuality is a sin, (though nowhere in the bible does it concisely say so,) and that God is against gay marriage because it is against the sanctity of marriage as defined in the Bible. (The Bible has some interesting marriages in it, though this seems to be largely ignored.) This gets to the core of my issue with the Bible... The religious seem to pick and choose the text from the Bible they want to believe, and that which they don't. What they have chosen to accept as gospel has been used to start wars, and to treat non-believers as though they were inhuman. The core of my issue here is that these hate-mongering people are using the Bible as an excuse, and treating the text in the Bible like a buffet of holiness- a smorgasboard of Godliness where they simply skip over the parts of the meal they don't like. But, the Bible is meant to be the foundation of faith; it is the word of God-- how can you simply ignore half of what it has to say? When building a house, the foundation must be solid and supportive. Religion is a house built on the foundation of the Bible, and you can't skip over bricks without the whole thing collapsing. So, let's look at some of those bricks that your foundation of faith is built on.

God is Satan
In the Bible, God explicitly and repeatedly says that he created evil, and that he does evil. The God worshipped by millions as a good of goodness is not. In fact, God describes himself as Satan in the Bible (see Revelation 22:16 below.

"I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright and morning star." (Revelation 22:16)

This passage by itself is innocent enough by itself, but in Isaiah, Saint Jerome translated the Hebrew "morning star" into the Latin term "Lucifer". (Isaiah 14:12). But, God admits to plenty of evil-doing to back up his claim:

"I form the light and creat darkness. I make peace, and I create evil: I the Lord do all of these things." (Isaiah 45:7)

God is omnipotent and all-powerful, (or so he claims to be in the remaining text in Isaiah. He didn't have to create Evil- he chose to. He didn't have to be evil. He didn't have to create the darkness, or murder, cancer, pain, suffering-- he chose to. God embraced evil, and used it often:

"..when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul" (1 Samuel 16:23)

"This said the Lord, 'Behold, I will rais e up evil against you from your own household.'" (2 Samuel

"Seven days from now I will send rain on the Earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the Earth every living thing I have made." (Genesis 7:4)

"I shall bring floodwaters on the Earth to destroy all life under the heavens; every creature that has the breath of life in it shall perish." (Genesis 6:7)

Genocide
At one point in the Bible, God kills everyone and everything on Earth. Most Christians argue that this was done to rid the world of evil, yet evil still exists afterwards-- so these deaths were thoughtless and pointless. Regardless of the reason, it's still mass murder. You can't go around killing millions of people because you think they are evil, or don't to what you say. I can think of a number of people who are notorious mass-murders of people who didn't follow their teachings: Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Stalin, ... and God.

"So the Lord said, "I will wipe from the faceof the Earth the human race I have created--and with them the animals, the birds, and the creatures that move along the ground, for I regret that I have created them. (Genesis 6:7).

Abortion
Christians are typically pro-life, and claim that killing an unborn child is murder, and against God's will. The Bible disagrees. In fact, God repeatedly performs abortions in the Bible, as well as mericlessly kills or orders infantcide:

"And when He hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done tresspass against her husband, that the water causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; than she shall be free, and shall concieve seed." (Numbers 5:11-21) (Numbers 5:27-28)

"The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open." (Hosea 13:16)

"He scaked Tipshah and ripped open all the pregnant women." (2 Kings 15:16)

"Give them O, Lord- what will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts." (Hosea 9:14)

"But kill both man and woman, infant and nusing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." (1 Samuel 15:3)

"Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us. He who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks." (Psamls 137:8-9) [I don't think anyone should be happy about mass-murdering infants in the name of God...]
