Deepthroating is a form of oral sex in which a penis, dildo or other phallic object is taken far into the mouth and into the throat, beyond the point where a typical blowjob stops.
The name comes from the 1972 adult film Deep Throat, which made the act widely known. It reached the mainstream soon after when journalists covering the Watergate scandal gave their secret informant the same nickname as a wry joke.
For receivers, the appeal is often the tighter, more intense sensation, the satisfaction of a partner taking everything, the feeling of being intensely wanted and the striking visual of the act. Givers may enjoy the sense of achievement in something difficult and chosen, the pleasure of pleasing a partner, or the submission and service it can express. Some givers describe a powerful physical or endorphin rush from the intensity itself, though experiences vary widely. Either partner can hold the dominant role depending on the dynamic, and it is often linked to face fucking and gagging play.
Not everyone can or wants to deepthroat. Gag reflexes differ a great deal from person to person, some never become comfortable with it, and that is entirely normal. It can be uncomfortable or painful, particularly when rushed or forced, and what is shown in porn is often edited from short takes.
Safety & Consent
The main risks involve breathing, gagging and loss of control. Partners should talk it through beforehand and agree on non-verbal signals to stop, since the giver may not be able to speak. The giver should always be able to pause and breathe, the receiver should stay responsive and never push past the giver’s comfort, and a check-in afterwards is a good idea.
