degradation

Degradation is a form of psychological play in which someone takes pleasure in being judged, disrespected and torn down, or in doing this to a consenting partner. It can involve verbal, emotional or physical acts, but its core is always psychological: making the receiver feel worthless, dirty or less than human.

Many people in BDSM touch on this kind of play now and then, but for those with a degradation kink or fetish it is a central goal rather than a side element. It is closely tied to shame and humiliation, and the three are often described as a scale. Shame is judgement the person turns on themselves, humiliation is judgement from others meant to cause embarrassment, and degradation goes further by judging the person and stripping them of worth at the same time. Degradation scenes usually contain plenty of humiliation along the way.

Consensual humiliation and degradation have long been part of BDSM imagery and practice, and they were taken up by leather culture as it developed in the 1950s and 1960s.

The appeal often lies in a sharpened power imbalance, with the dominant as the controlling force and the submissive made small and insignificant. Some people are simply aroused by things that feel forbidden. Degraders may enjoy reducing someone to nothing and watching them take pleasure in it, while receivers may enjoy feeling like a toy or object, and some describe that loss of self as freeing, cathartic or even healing. Forms it can take include small penis humiliation, sissification, human furniture and objectification, pet play framed in a degrading way, and at the more extreme end human toilet play.

Safety & Consent

Degradation only works between consenting adults who have negotiated it carefully. Because it targets a person’s sense of worth, it can cause real emotional harm if words land in sensitive places, so limits around specific topics, language and acts should be agreed beforehand, along with a safe word or signal. Aftercare and later check-ins are especially important to restore the receiver’s sense of value outside the scene.
