Dronification is a kink in which a person is transformed, or transforms themselves, into a drone: a depersonalised, obedient and often machine-like being. It frequently combines enclosing fetish gear such as full-body suits, hoods and headphones with the loss of identity and submission to programming. For many the aim is to set aside their individuality, will and sense of self for the duration of play.
It is a form of power exchange, but with a distinctive twist: the drone submits to programming, protocol or a system rather than directly to a person. A Dominant, often called the Operator, may “program” the drone with commands, routines or hypnotic scripts. Dronification is sometimes compared with dollification, although the setting, mood and practice are quite different.
The fantasy draws heavily on science fiction themes of assimilation, hive minds, mind control and obedient androids, and grew as latex, rubber and cyber-fetish imagery merged with mind-control play in online fetish spaces. People enjoy it for the release of ego loss, the calm of simply following directives, the aesthetics of rubber and uniformity, and the intense trust it requires.
Common terms
A distinct vocabulary has grown up around the kink. The drone’s gear is its “shell”, sometimes with “structure” such as corsets or binders to change the silhouette, and the mental state of being a drone is called dronespace or drone headspace. Besides the Operator, scenes may include a Programmer who writes the rules and routines and a Technician who activates, inspects or modifies the drone within the fantasy. A program is a set of expected behaviours, a function is an assigned task such as cleaning, guarding or serving, a directive is a standing rule, and permissions set out who may command or touch the drone. Drones are often called units and given a designation or number instead of a name, and may be imagined as nodes in a larger hive or system. Conversion or assimilation describes the fantasy of a human becoming a drone, activation marks the switch into drone mode, and deactivation the return to ordinary identity.
Safety & Consent
Because dronification deliberately suppresses identity and speech, a shutdown protocol or priority shutdown, an agreed way to end play immediately if anything goes wrong or a boundary is reached, is essential and should work even when the drone is hooded or cannot speak. Enclosing gear needs attention to breathing and overheating, and both people should negotiate limits beforehand and allow time for deactivation and aftercare so the drone can return fully to themselves.
It is related to rubber and latex fetish, hypnosis kink, objectification and dollification.
