nyotaimori

Nyotaimori is the practice of presenting sushi or sashimi on the naked body of a person, traditionally a woman, who lies still while guests eat from them. The Japanese term translates roughly as serving food on a woman’s body.

In its traditional form the emphasis is on cleanliness, stillness and conduct that stays strictly non-sexual. In fetish and BDSM settings it is often adapted as objectification play, with the body treated as a platter or table, combined with elements of service, endurance and careful ritual presentation. Any sensual or erotic element in these adaptations depends on what everyone involved has negotiated and agreed to.

Despite claims that it is an ancient custom, the practice most likely appeared between the 1960s and 1980s in upmarket Japanese resorts and nightlife districts, and only reached a wider international audience around the 1990s and 2000s.

For the person serving as the table, the appeal may lie in being admired or objectified in a controlled way, or in the challenge of holding perfectly still. Diners may enjoy the sense of ritual control, the luxury of the setting and the visual spectacle. Others are drawn to the sensory side, such as cool or damp food against warm skin, or to the artistry of the presentation. Between partners it can also be a tender, trusting act, much like feeding someone by hand. It overlaps with food play, objectification and human furniture.
