A penetrative technique that focuses on the entrance of the vagina rather than deep penetration, using the tip of a penis, a finger, a tongue or a toy. The vaginal opening has a high concentration of nerve endings, which is why many people find this kind of shallow stimulation especially pleasurable.
The term was coined in research carried out by the Indiana University School of Medicine with OMGYES, in which a large share of the women surveyed said they used it to make sex feel better.
Some enjoy shallowing for the intense, tingling sensation it can produce, and it is often preferred by those who find deep penetration uncomfortable or simply less enjoyable. Its slower, more deliberate pace can make sex feel more intimate, and it also works as a form of teasing that builds anticipation.
