Almasexual combines the Spanish word alma, meaning “soul,” with sexual, essentially meaning “soul sexual.”
Almasexual is a recent term associated with Durek Verrett, a self-described shaman and alternative spiritual practitioner who publicly described his own sexuality as “soul sexual." Verrett was publicly using “soul sexual” by 2019 to describe attraction based on a person’s soul or energy rather than their gender.
The Spanish-language form almasexual appears to have gained much wider attention in 2025, around media coverage of Verrett and the Netflix documentary "Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story."
