cleave gag

A gag is any item or device placed in or over the mouth during BDSM or sex play to limit its use. Gags make clear speech difficult and muffle other sounds. They can be improvised from things to hand, such as a scarf, a tie, a stocking, rope or tape, or bought as purpose-made gear, which comes in several common styles.

A cleave gag is a strip of material drawn back between the lips and tied or buckled behind the head, so that it sits in the corners of the mouth and holds the lips apart. Cloth, a scarf or a bandana can be used, as can leather or fabric straps sold for bondage. The name comes from the way the band splits, or cleaves, the mouth, often drawing the cheeks in a little.

Because it does not fill the mouth the way a ball gag does, a cleave gag muffles speech rather than stopping it. Some like it for the look of enforced silence and the mild sense of helplessness it gives, others because it is more comfortable than mouth-filling gags and can be made from almost any length of fabric.

Safety & Consent

A cleave gag leaves the airway open, but any gag still makes talking and breathing harder. Partners should agree on a nonverbal stop signal beforehand, and a gagged person should never be left alone.
