Leather slut appears to have developed within queer leather culture by at least the late 1980s. In 1989, a San Francisco group called the Safesex Leather Sluts was organizing leather and S/M events, showing that the term was already being used as a proud community label.
The name combines leather, referring to leather culture or identity, with the reclaimed word slut.
The term later became common in pornography, where it is often used more literally for a highly sexual person dressed in leather.
