A gag is any item or device placed in or over the mouth during BDSM or sex play to limit its use. Gags make clear speech difficult and muffle other sounds. They can be improvised from things to hand, such as a scarf, a tie, a stocking, rope or tape, or bought as purpose-made gear, which comes in several common styles.

A forniphilic gag is a gag that doubles as a mount or holder, so that the wearer’s head becomes part of a piece of furniture, a display or a prop. Alongside the mouthpiece it has a fixing point such as a screw thread, clamp, rod or small platform, to which the dominant partner can attach an object. Depending on the scene this might be a dildo, a household item such as an ashtray or brush, or something purely decorative like flowers. The name comes from forniphilia, the fetish of using people as furniture or as fixtures in a scene, and the term seems to have grown up informally among bondage photographers, models and gear makers. The appeal is less about silence than about being made into part of the setting. Some enjoy the objectification of serving as a fixture, while dominant partners may enjoy arranging the scene around the submissive. Others are drawn by the stillness and focus that holding a pose demands, by the look of a carefully composed scene for photography or ritual, or by the inward, almost meditative state that some wearers describe. It overlaps with bondage, objectification and service submission. Safety & ConsentThe wearer must be able to breathe freely through the nose, and the scene should stop at any sign of breathlessness or dizziness. Anything mounted on the gag should be light, since weight strains the neck, jaw and spine, and poses should be kept short, with breaks and support for the head where needed. Because speech is blocked, agree on a non-verbal stop signal, such as dropping an object, beforehand. The wearer should never be left unattended, as even a light gag can become dangerous quickly if they panic or slip. |
